Kiawah Island, SC
22 August 2001
I wasn't really planning
to do a sand sculpture that day.
It was our last afternoon
together at Kiawah and I promised Betty we'd go to the beach .
. just for a swim.
But somebody left a
pile of sand and a hole, and suddenly the idea for this sculpture
just popped into my head.
Betty was so patient
and understanding. Even with the digging pretty much done in advance
(thanks to my unknown
"assistant") this sculpture still took nearly four hours
to complete.
We learned the next
day that someone at a Kiawah beach got bitten that afternoon,
possibly by a shark.
So maybe that pile
of sand was more provident that we knew.
